What Counsellors Do
Counselling professionals are concerned with helping people explore their unique experience of the world, in order to overcome life problems.
Counselling is a helping approach that highlights how a client is feeling and what they think about the problem they have sought help for. A counsellor works to explore the emotional and intellectual experience of a client, using client-centered therapy to enable the client to explore many aspects of their life and feelings. This process helps individuals overcome problems in their lives.
Counsellors typically work in hospitals, community services, government departments such as substance abuse rehabilitation centres, child and adolescent mental health services, local councils, NGOs, private-practice, universities and schools, and research and corporate institutions.
